What I’ve learned photographing weddings at this Walnut Creek garden throughout the seasons and my tips for you.

I’ve been coming to Ruth Bancroft Garden since before I ever photographed weddings here. I used to bring my kids to pick out plants for our own garden just up the street, back before the event barn was even built.

Since then, I’ve photographed weddings here across the seasons, from intimate celebrations to larger wedding days, and I’ve seen how much the Garden can change depending on the time of year, the weather, the light, and how a couple chooses to use the space.

A wonderful bonus is that there is flora and fauna for your backdrop year-round- which cannot be said of all gardens.

Why Ruth Bancroft Garden Works So Well for a Wedding

Ruth Bancroft Garden feels surprisingly tucked away for being right in Walnut Creek. Once you’re inside, you’re immersed in the Garden, and it really does feel like a hidden gem.

One of the things I love most about it as a wedding venue is how adaptable it is. I’ve seen the Garden support a really diverse range of styling, florals, color palettes, and decor, and each wedding can feel completely different. At the same time, there is already so much texture, structure, and visual interest in the landscape that you don’t need to bring in a ton for it to feel special.

Think About Where You Want to Get Ready

Ruth Bancroft Garden doesn’t have two traditional getting-ready suites, so this is worth considering when you’re planning your photography coverage.

Some couples choose to get ready offsite and include that part of the day in their coverage. There is also an upstairs room at the Garden that can work for dressing.

If you don’t want full getting-ready coverage but still want a few of those quieter, anticipatory moments documented, we can create space for them once we’re at the Garden. I’ve photographed smaller finishing touches and getting-ready-inspired moments right in the landscape, which can feel much more connected to the rest of the story of the day.

Your event window at the Garden is typically 3–10 PM, so that is another consideration when building the photography timeline. If you want more time for portraits or other parts of the story than the venue window allows, there are nearby locations we can incorporate before arriving at the Garden.

There isn’t one right way to structure it. It’s more about deciding which parts of the day matter to you and building the coverage around those.

Choosing Your Ceremony Location

Ruth Bancroft Garden offers a few options for your ceremony, with the pond and eucalyptus grove creating two very different settings.

One thing I especially love about both locations is the ability to photograph the ceremony from a full range of angles. Rather than being limited to one perspective, I can move around the ceremony and incorporate different parts of the Garden into the story as it unfolds.

At the pond, the water, the folly, and the surrounding garden become part of the backdrop, giving us several very different perspectives within the same ceremony.

The eucalyptus grove has a completely different feeling. You can be slightly elevated, making it easier for your guests to see you while you’re surrounded by the trees and the distinctive garden landscape.

I’ve photographed ceremonies in both locations, and each gives us the opportunity to create a varied set of ceremony photographs while still feeling completely immersed in the Garden.

Indoor or Outdoor Reception

Ruth Bancroft Garden offers both indoor and outdoor reception options, giving you some flexibility in how you want the second half of your wedding to feel.

An outdoor reception carries the garden-party feeling into dinner and dancing, while the Great Room offers a modern indoor option. I’ve photographed both, and each creates a very different atmosphere while still giving you the Garden as the setting for the earlier parts of the day.

Over the years, I have photographed intimate gatherings and design-forward celebrations, each shaped by the couple and the season. These galleries reflect that range. Different palettes, timelines, and moods, all grounded in an art-forward approach and a respect for the setting.
